Jimmie Standing in the Rain

Thought I'd start a thread about a particular song for anyone else interested in talking, song by song, about what they found. Hope others will start separate threads for each song. Hope that is OK. Feel like I'm barging in a bit. Anyway, Jimmie: Kept hearing this Ellington strain in the trumpet dec...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

Regarding the link to “great war fiction” and its meditation on “You Hung the Moon,” a few minor points (which i also posted on that website as a comment on that piece): 1. First of all, I think that, as with Ira Gershwin that the writer mentions, this is not “the singer” who is being condescending ...

Re: FYI Canada Order just shipped

i wrote an email to the ones who send me the info complaining about the inefficiency, and all i got back was a "thanks very much" and a simple reiteration of shipping times, address, etc. as if i complained because i didn't quite understand. duh!

Re: FYI Canada Order just shipped

HOWEVER, JUST LOOKED AT THE EMAIL 10-20 BUSINESS DAYS FOR DELIVERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! looks like i'm buying another one! this is really bad. where are these being shipped from that they would, even with snail mail, take up to 20 business days?? this is really unfortunate and unforeseen. if i'd known, i...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

what sort of outlet is there, if any, for something more thoughtful and interesting, where elvis could stretch out and think and explore the rich abundance that is going on here, and have the chance to enjoy doing so, like i expect he really would. i was actually hoping for a rolling stone cover of ...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

you know, it really is a shame when you think of how carefully and beautifully elvis can speak about music, composition, history, players, writers, that he is asked to spend his time in so many instances answering questions like "is this bluegrass?" if this was a REAL question that actuall...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

i hate to even venture this out loud, but i do really believe that elvis is too "something" for a lot of people, including a lot of critics, to understand or to like immediately and quickly and passively. his work always requires something of me, some effort that always, to varying degrees...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

i think this is exactly right, that weird qualified praise. seems to be sometimes of a piece with the genre hopping, angry guy, knee (shall we say?) jerks. when i look at things like north, pfm, delivery, just to name three, they really are quite spectacular, beautiful accomplishments, as is nationa...

Re: Yes, it's early, but NR's greatest song is:

hung the moon does help with the current in which jimmie, josephine, and voice in the dark run. i find these four have a bit of music-hall-ish-ness that is much more authentic than the old version i remember too well, back when Winchester cathedral, honey pie, and voh-dee-oh-doh mawkishly swung thro...

Re: Yes, it's early, but NR's greatest song is:

just listening to the streaming of the songs on colbert nation. the vocal of you hung the moon, now that i can hear it more clearly, is unbelievable, controlled yet full of deep deep feeling. the song structure etc., could make it almost a North song, but i found that those songs were often sung rat...

Re: Yes, it's early, but NR's greatest song is:

one bell ringing might not be #1, but the way that the melody line mimics the opening 12 string guitar part in Eight Miles High on the line "one lonely bird," and then the bass clarinet (??) mimics a big of Eric Dolphy, sort of, when he played with Coltrane, who himself recorded "Indi...
