Re: 1979 , Get Happy sleevenote/'highwire Elvis'

since its release i've started w. i.c.s.u.f.f.d. it really is powerful how, even when the cd came out in a different order, i still started w. track 11. at first release I simply built up an experience of the "real running order" myself and was simply confused but actually uninterested in ...

Re: Astonished [Still]!

great post and a great reminder of a great work, c.s. thanks. it really is wonderful to not treat this or that cd of e.c.'s as some sort of aberrant sideline project or vanity fare. that somebody in today's musical world would try such a thing, let alone succeed so well and fail, in parts, so wonder...

Re: Elvis part of Grammy tribute (L.A.,Feb 9) to T Bone Burn

Given its weird thud on the national stage, i wonder if National Ransom will even get mentioned. Sorry, bad joke. I read in the liner notes to the ej and lr. union cd. that the ice got broken between the players when tbone played an old gospel video. now THAT is the beautiful touch that "produc...

Re: "Want a Hit? Keep It Simple" or Where did EC's mojo go!

is there some way to put this question to John Pareles? i think this thing about there being no "story" to it is really important. what, after all, would make it "noticeable" if you were not already a fan?

Re: 100% Album

hi and happy back at ya! you know, i tend to listen to any album right through and don't skip tracks. sometimes i'll listen to half a cd ( like NR because it is soooo long, 30 minutes at a time is find w. me). i sort of don't want to decide for the artist what needs skipping. without its "weake...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

"Stop being so clever Elvis." Maybe, but what I don't want him to stop is being smart, and full of a deep knowledge of music, and having really good ears and wonderful taste, and able to articulate and open up, in his work and in interviews, living fields of music I'd not quite experienced...

Re: The Gibson Interview: Elvis Costello, Dec. '10

great post, p.d. i think you're right. it is part of my lament about the poor sales of NR. not money or quantities exactly, but that there isn't a more widespread understanding and recognition of how good this c.d. is at expressing and challenging this world of ours, its franticness, the lies and mo...

me too. i really don't think he did anything wrong or anything different that exactly what keeps music alive as a living tradition. the lennon thing was just a joke. HOWEVER, i really would love to hear him sing some of these older songs. like he covered that jimmie rodgers song on some radio show t...

Re: A Voice In The Dark

I know!!! The Berlin Estate should force him to to a whole c.d. of cover songs, just like John Lennon was required to do over "here come old flat top"!!! I would, no kidding, love to hear Elvis sing "Isn't it a Lovely Day?" for example, and to hear how he might arrange it, as wit...

Loathsome, Lumbering and Lugubrious sounds like the law firm that the wolf on the cover works with. "Mr. Lumbering will see you now."

oh my! especially obvious in the instrumental part that plays before d.c. is asked to sing. seems like the full melody over: C...........................Am7...........Dm7.....G Not a moment too soon as we blue the moon C....................Am7.....Dm7.....G And a wolf begins to howl in tune from 11 ...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

i agree with those three alexv. and in two there is still that very small bit that accelerates--"i looked in her eyes and through that window i fell" plus leon's pianer in one case (not russell's best, but sonically refreshing to hear), the weird chord change right at the chorus of spell, ...

me too re one bell ringing, esp. the byrds/coltrane/bass clarinet/dolphy sound that could be a hissing of summerlawnsness thingy. re dr. watson. i find that i really need to click into the old testament, black birds hanging upsidedown invisible republic looms and honeycombs weird what-the-hell-is-go...

Five Small Words help

Now as to my ambivalence re: Five Small Words. An ok. song, but i am absolutely in love with the SOUND of it, especially the keeeeerack at the very beginning that someone else mentioned right after this song first appeared.. So here is the help i need. i'm hearing four guitars, each quite distinctiv...

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

I agree re: length. that's why, lately, i've taken e.c. at his word that this is "a double." it gets interesting if you make it two 8-track l.p.s. and easier to listen to "one album" at a time. 1. National Ransom 2. Jimmie Standing in the Rain 3. Stations of the Cross 4. A Slow D...

Re: Dedicated National Ransack Thread

Frankly, this is becoming a bit self fulfilling and almost self aggrandizing. All these woes about the end of record companies and record stores, and then this thing gets distributed, first, in a format that many folks don't have access to any more, and second, it's not even sold on his own website?...
