I was not there, thank God. And as a transplant on this island of idiots, I have to say...Long Islanders are mostly a pretty vile lot...not so different from "Jersey Shore"...

oh noooooooooo, please do NOT let billy joel hit the stage. then again, it would add to my happiness about being home tonight, there tomorrow!  Absolutely! What if there had been an Elvis-n-Billy duet of "Piano Man" or some other saccharine horror? Whew! The world has been spar...

Re: Your favorite MLAR (including bonus disc) track and why

somehow these threads fit. tom waits would do a wonderful job singing this, a sort of ramshackle parade-drum waltz full of images, hidden implications, shadows, shivers though the room was like a furnace, and arrays of icons--"still fastened to the frame"-- and family tethers that bind (&...

Re: "They wanted facts, Facts!"

But Sulky, nobody was talking about this issue. It was brought up out of the blue on Elvis's birthday when nobody else was talking about it. I won't be posting in this thread any more. But, Neil...this is a classic CS thread... CS, of course, is always eager to remind us all of Elvis' shortcomings,...

You're right--the awesomeness IS staggering. My 2 favorites too. In fact, I bought my first Elvis LP and first Tom Waits LP on the same day...in 1982. It was love at first listen, of course.

Re: Spectacle Season 2 Release Date - 7 December 2010

... Regarding the supplements, the best part for me is a quick 45 second moment in the behind-the-scenes doc. It's a snippet of Ghost Train during the Sept 21, 2009 soundcheck. Just EC and guitar. Unfortunately, David Furnish is talking over most of it. Kind of like an annoying neighbor who ruins a...

Re: Revolver Tour Setlists on ElvisCostello.com

well said ypsi...did you like 5-23 recording? Hi BA Haven't been able to listen yet, but I will--hopefully today. Excited. Everybody has favorites they didn't hear--30-or so records, plus a few covers...40 slots on the wheel. Do the math. All his albums were under-represented, out of necessity. Wou...

Re: Revolver Tour Setlists on ElvisCostello.com

yes, of course we all enjoy a new cover or a handful of obscure songs, but you obviously do understand a portion of the hits must come nightly. at least it is not EVERY show that you get those same EIGHT or NINE songs. it really is just a tiny bit of his set that is played nightly. but, i do hope y...

Re: "De-Lovely" clip

Absolutely! Elvis was a real standout in De-lovely--looked great, too. He has such a good feel for standards--approaches them with both enthusiasm & respect. I'd be first in line for any such club date or recording. In fact, I've made a mixtape for myself of a bunch of his standards (including o...

Re: Elvis/Imposters Beacon Theatre New York, NY May 23, 2011

A great show! My only complaint is that Elvis broke my heart TWICE with "Detectives vs. Hoover Factory." The audience vote obviously went to Detectives, but Hoover Factory was competitive enough in terms of audience response that I had truly hoped he might play BOTH. But THEN, when the ne...

I read about this when Armed Forces was initially released, and it's mentioned in a review of the reissue from last year: The album's hit single in England, "Oliver's Army," references conflicts around the world and hits an anti-war theme Costello would visit later during Margaret Thatche...

Re: Song meanings ? Tart and Distorted Angel

Regarding "Tart", I take it to be about Elvis falling out of love with his second wife (while apparently on vacation in Spain). It's my view that he very deliberately included the imagery of the sour oranges rolling in the gutter as a counterpoint to "Sweet Pear"--which, of cours...
