Re: Elvis Costello OBE

But doing both? What's going on there? I think you have set this up as an either/or thing, but that's just the way you see it. He seems to see it differently, that's all. Not unlike someone saying, "how come these songs on Armed Forces sound bright & poppy like ABBA but the lyrics are dark...

Re: Elvis Costello OBE

I'm fine with this. Elvis performed for Prince Charles back in 1995 and gave similar reasons for it-- McCartney asked him to, and it was to benefit a music school. Now it's 2019 and it's his mum and because it's an award for his "services to music." I think this is them endorsing him and h...

Re: Elvis Costello & The Imposters 7” Look Now vinyl box set All orders will now ship by FRIDAY, MAY 17

One other slightly unfortunate omission, given the nature of this box, is that the booklet doesn't contain Costello's detailed liner notes, which DO exist and have not been released publicly. They are thick booklet-length, a la the best of his Rhino reissues (think the later ones, once he had really...

I wish it had exclusive tracks, but as a luxury art object commemorating an album I am thrilled with, I love it. It is fun, and also for those who don't want to shell out or cannot afford such an indulgence, it is non-essential. Just a shiny pretty thing.

Sigh. Well, it was a badly planned surprise, certainly, considering that the venn disgram of people who might buy this deluxe box set and people who might buy a 12" Costello record store day EP is two circles that are overlapping to the point that they are close to being one circle. It feels li...

Re: Elvis Costello & The Imposters 7” Look Now vinyl box set will now be out MAY 8, 2019

Count me among those who just aren't that bothered about a manufacturing delay for a luxury collectors' item. More people have posted about the shipping delay than about the 4 new recordings we got so far this year, all of which are terrific. I sure hope that the 4 new tracks aren't the same ones fr...

Re: Elvis Costello & The Imposters: Purse EP (Record Store Day)

What a fantastic EP. Prime cuts from the LOOK NOW sessions, but they all make sense as an EP. Part of me was thinking that hearing more from the LN sessions would tempt me to second guess the album's selections but in this digital streaming age of playlists, I like the way the LOOK NOW/Regarde Maint...

Re: LOOK NOW on 8 7" 45's box set coming 2/22

There is also nothing here to indicate that these new tracks won't also show up on all the usual streaming sites. American Tune/Lucky Dog was a pricey 10" vinyl collectible but also popped up on Spotify roughly the same time.

Re: Look Now: new album announced!

I love both the B&C cover and the Look Now sleeve.

OOOI is bad but I think it is so deliberately bad and is intended to be part of the joke of it being a Various Artists release. I respect how deeply Costello committed to the gag, to the point where it undoubtedly cost him record sales.

Re: 5 Favorite Elvis Albums

1. Mighty Like A Rose 2. Brutal Youth These two sometimes switch places. Admittedly, BY being my first "new" EC album after I became a fan, it imprinted on me deeply in ways that make it hard to compete with. MLAR is a top 2 pick I arrive at honestly-- I got to know that record at the same...

Re: Look Now: new album announced!

I do think Look Now is a masterpiece, but then again I have essentially been waiting for this album ever since Brutal Youth (my first "new" EC album once I became a fan). When Geoff Emerick was announced as co-producer for ATUB, I thought, "this will be the sophisticated flip side to ...

Re: Bright Blue Times, not the song but the fan magazine

This was my website! Thanks for remembering it. The song came first, thought it was the most obscure song I could've picked, or close to it, at the time. He had recorded it for a TV movie, played the demo on Irish radio (my cousin taped it for me) and I also had a bootleg of a concert in Italy where...

Re: Look Now: new album announced!

It's interesting how a selective metric has been used for two of Costello's biggest "breaks" to measure how long it has been since his last record. When WIWC was released, the standard line was that it had been 6 years since his last "rowdy" record, 1996's All This Useless Beauty...

Re: Look Now: new album announced!

Re: New Elvis/Burt Bacharach songs!!

I personally would love to hear The Imposters be the main band on any new EC/BB album. I'd also love it if EC had a heavier hand in some of the orchestrations. One of my favorite Imposters tracks is the NORTH bonus track, "Impatience" which shows off a side of The Imposters that he hasn't ...

I would say it's also possible that we could be looking at Kojak Variety Vol. 2, but that's just me maybe reading too much into his tweets of various LP covers (Sinatra, Beach Boys, Butterfield Blues Band, etc) amidst all his cryptic photos from the recording studio... If I had a wish beyond "j...

Re: Reissue catalogue in a mess?

EC in the late 90s spoke of the idea of destroying his master tapes in the year 2000. He was half-joking, but in many ways Universal managed to just about do the same amount of damage in terms of utterly bungling the Live releases and making the back catalog completely boring in the aftermath of the...

Re: New Elvis song in "Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool"

I think EC's "third act" as a recording artist was the Universal Years plus his 2 LPs for Hear Music, ending with NR. I think we are in the Epilogue now. Unless something changes, we are in the part where he only makes records when someone else makes it happen, but never because he himself...

Re: 'Bright Blue Times' - vinyl single - 500 on sale at latest shows, June 2017

On the one hand, I hope that this is the first of many self-released Lupe-O-Tone records. On the other, I hope that Costello will make them slightly less scarce if this pressing of 500 sells out as it undoubtedly will. There is a fine line between fun and torturing fans. Or maybe torturing fans is p...

Considering that I loved this song so much I named my Costello website after it back in 1998, I will take this marketing strategy personally if I don't wind up acquiring one of these singles.
