Re: Big Issue interview , May 2018

Slightly surprised by the various suggestions of 'I'll Wear It Proudly'. I mean, I love it, and it can reduce me to tears, but if we're regarding those lyrics as 'an expression of pure joy', we're all in big trouble. :D

Re: Elvis and The Imposters, Nocturne Live - Oxfordshire (UK), June 16, 2018

Whilst the "two for one" doesn't bode well in terms of overall sales, at least it suggests Elvis will have recovered enough to perform at all the other shows. He seems to have managed a corporate (and I imagine, very well-paid) gig on 4th May without collapsing, so the indications are goo...

Re: Big Issue interview , May 2018

But, for example, Paul Weller's 'You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened' is a straightforward joyous love song. Is there such a song in Elvis's catalogue? There must be, surely? 'Lovable'? 'Sweet Pear'? 'My Three Sons'? Even 'Slow Drag' has references to some amusing/problematic aspects of a rela...

Re: Big Issue interview , May 2018

I think this is a lovely interview, and makes me like Elvis (as a person) more than I have for a long time. I've always believed (and still do) that he is the single greatest performer/singer-songwriter of our generation, but everything I had seen, heard or read, for decades now really, had made me ...

Re: Pills and Soap post 2001 lyrics?

I'm not so convinced about the reason for the change. I'd never read 'Lord and Lady Muck' as referring specifically to Charles and Diana, I assumed it was simply a reference to the photo-shoots of the royalty/aristocracy generally, which are designed to divert our attention from what the rich and pr...

Colour me unimpressed. Definitely a site intended to sell peripherals to the casual browser rather than one intended to be interesting to long-term fans. Hell, even Bruce Springsteen's website has a discography. Having said that (and until the surprise news of the last few weeks) Elvis did seem to h...

Preview on BBC R2 (preferably FM) yesterday sounds great/paid-for d'load today doesn't sound so good!!!! Happens to me a lot - hear stuff on the radio, sounds brilliant, download it, listen to the download on the PC in the study, not great. I've found the solution is to burn it to a CD, stick it on...

Re: "Someone Else's Heart" - EC single for Record Store Day

Can anyone remind me which singles EC has so far released for Record Store Day? Can't seem to find a list anywhere online. I don't mean just this year, but in preceding years. As far as I can remember, only National Ransack , the Hollywood High EP & Wise Up: Thought were RSD releases. But I may...

Agreed, Verbal - I think this means an Imposters album and tour. Yessss!!! Why assemble these scattered players for one gig only? Probably because Elvis' Mum's birthday is 11th July and he usually likes to find an excuse to come over for that. Plus the money will be good for what looks like being a...

Re: Elvis song taught at 'O'-level?

Does anyone remember the rumour that an Elvis song lyric was taught in English lessons in the early 1980s? Is it true, and if so, what was the song? I had a vague memory that it was (a) 'You'll Never Be a Man', (b) set by one of the Scottish examining boards; and (c) centred on the (admittedly stro...

That's a really helpful summary Hawksmoor, many thanks. Can I just add that the Live DLMBM is probably the live track on the 12 " US promo from WNEW-FM. Meanwhile, 2 different versions of EIWTB appeared on 12 " in the UK with different running times. The first issue was on F Beat XX32 T a...

I'm intrigued why She only had one verse (although one verse is more than enough in my opinion. He introduced it by saying 'the band don't play on this one 'cos they hate it' and there was a bit of laughter all round. He then started 'She' on his own with just the guitar while all three Imposters r...

Aw, I love that! Although, objectively speaking, it probably does fall more into the 'guilty pleasures' category than the 'out-and-out classic' category!

The Stamping Ground.

It's just...dull, tuneless and lacking in interest of any kind. Which is something an Elvis Costello song should never be.

I'm not mad-keen on 'Broken' either. Beyond that, I honestly believe I can find something to enjoy in every other EC song.
