Re: Jeff Tweedy Recruits Elvis Costello for ‘Gwendolyn’ Video

I love Jeff Tweedy, I love Wilco, I love this song, but I do not love this video! Too off-putting for me.

Re: Steve Nieve - The Immobile Tour BackStage

Oh, so....during a pandemic with near-record unemployment levels and people struggling to pay their bills, SN has decided to start charging people for the full experience. Got it. This is a bad take. A very bad take. He provided free entertainment for most of the pandemic, until it was no longer ec...

Re: 50 Songs For 50 Days - Elvis Costello's October Surprise

Wow dudes, have a little more faith. The radical republican right and all their boogaloo bois are a bunch of weak pussies. In Portland, Oregon, 20000 of them were supposed to show up for an anti BLM/antifa rally. 200 were there. They are mostly bluster. I believe decency will prevail precisely beca...

Re: 50 Songs For 50 Days - Elvis Costello's October Surprise

Well, these lyrics really are amazing, but I am a bit surprised at how utterly, articulately woeful they are about our circumstances and our chances of survival, about how deep the wounds are, about how exactly hopeless reading them makes me feel, and so on. It is not just that I hadn't noticed bef...

Re: New song "Phonographic Memory", August 28, 2020

Maybe its just me this isnt very good and I doubt I will bothered listening to it again In fairness, I think it's more clever and interesting than actually 'good', but that's fine - I think that about 20 or 30 EC tracks (including several on North if I'm really putting my cards on the table). But I...

A new edition of the single is now available: https://looknow.elviscostello.com/products/676857-no-flag-tri-color-7-vinyl-2xlp-vinyl-optional Thanks! I had missed out on the original release and was able to nab this one. Looking forward to the new album – I haven't been this excited for an EC relea...

Re: which of these two long players is MORE of a clunker?

See, now this has turned into an interesting conversation! I'll have to have a listen to "Broken" today. Never paid it much attention one way or another. Maybe it's horrible. I know I may be in a minority on this but MLAR is one of my favorite EC albums. Broken is a stand out song like no...

Re: New song "No Flag" released June 5, 2020

The homemade yet aggressive sound reminded me somewhat of National Ransom No. 2 from 2011 or so. I gave it another listen and remembered thinking at the time how much I wished he’d do an album entirely like that — just him performing everything — and I wonder if we’re finally getting that now? I do...

Driving back from the beach to the airport for a flight to SF, WXPN’s Dan Reed played Unwanted Number. So cool! It’s XPN’s “Gotta Hear” song of the week Nice. Sounds great on the radio! (Old school) Nice! Love me some XPN. They're the one Philly radio station I listen to exclusively, and also donat...

The teleprompters didn't bother me as much, because, like you said, a lot of these were deep cuts, and he still made it sound like he wasn't reading from them. Speaking of smart phones and toys (I saw somebody taking a picture with his iPad! oh my), at the same venue two weeks prior, I saw Fiona App...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

I'm prepared for Elvis to once again start shouting that he won't ever be making any new music again, like he does every few years, and to return to touring, perhaps debuting a new song here and there, perhaps recording an album whenever he feels like it. He's obviously struck gold with the Spinning...

Re: 40 DAYS OF ELVIS COSTELLO: A Countdown To WISE UP GHOST

A splendid record, practically flawless, apart from My Lovely Jezebel and The Spell That You Cast. In fact, if you removed those two and replaced them with Condemned Man and Poor Borrowed Dress, respectively, then it becomes flawless. Even the title track has grown on me in recent years. I didn't li...

Re: 40 DAYS OF ELVIS COSTELLO: A Countdown To WISE UP GHOST

Sugarcane was an album I very much enjoyed at the time, but the magic of the performances – and they are lovely – dissipated once I discovered the backgrounds of the songs. To me, it's a lot like the Rolling Stones' Tattoo You : excellent songs, excellent performances, but I can't get over knowing ...

Re: 40 DAYS OF ELVIS COSTELLO: A Countdown To WISE UP GHOST

I liked River in Reverse at the time, but treated it more as a side-step than a full-on musical project (oh, how I bet Elvis would love to hear that!). It was born from catastrophic events, and part of me views it as a way of helping out Allen Toussaint – one of the most underrated songwriters I can...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

That's what this feels like - not a collection of songs, which is what we usually get - but a single, pulsating piece which swims in and out of focus - it's almost like the planet has a brain, and this is its stream of troubled consciousness. Exactly my thoughts; I couldn't have put it better myself.

Re: EC Live at Apple's iPhone event

Well, that performance of Tripwire just solidified it as my favorite track not only from Wise Up Ghost, but probably from the last dozen years or so.

Looks like Elvis has gained some weight back, too, which is good. His gaunt appearance over the past few years has been concerning.
