Re: Accidents/Arizona/ Mexico etc.

Just to cap off this old thread, EC tells all to the Wall Street Journal:

Re: The Complete Armed Forces (Super Deluxe Edition)

I'm just popping in to take a victory lap for figuring out a couple of years ago that the Tucson cab driver story actually recounted the origins of "Busy Bodies", not "Accidents Will Happen". :D Receipts here: http://www.elviscostellofans.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10747&...

more so on your side of the atlantic. we stopped recognizing royalty almost 250 years ago. this continuing practice seems quaint by our cowboy standards. not trying to step on toes. Not true. Re: Elvis Costello OBE

Thanks, Ulster Boy. I guess the fact that some civil servants receive honors upon retirement explains why some people cursed EC for accepting "honors for doing your job" -- although that wouldn't seem to apply to him.

Re: Elvis Costello OBE

Very eloquent debate. Thanks for the kind words, Ulster Boy, although some might regret your encouraging me. This gets back to the brawl you wandered into. Consider how all this has looked from the outside: "Hey, this guy whose music we all like just got some kind of state honour for hi...

Re: Elvis Costello OBE

I expect you must be right, although it surprises me. EC is a multi-millionaire rock star with an official website containing links to his 'store' where you can buy all manner of stuff, loads of promotional and advertising sections as well as his blogs/posts. I would be surprised if he was running ...

Re: Elvis Costello OBE

OK. Wouldn't dispute any of that. I would dispute the idea that EC might be 'surprised, bemused and conflicted' but simultaneously carefully calculating how best to 'make the most of his social media engagement in the wake of this newsworthy event'. I'm being open and honest here. If he was truly '...

Re: Elvis Costello OBE

Hawksmoor, Maybe you're just a guy who wandered into the bar just as the brawl was winding down and got himself pasted for his trouble. On the other hand, you did call EC "pathetic", which is a pretty obnoxious thing to say about anybody, so maybe you should have known better -- or at leas...

Re: Elvis Costello OBE

My dearest Hawksmoor, To put it nicely, you may want to consider the possibility that EC's Facebook and other communications are not intended exclusively for the consumption of the tiny subset of his fans that feel substantially conflicted or negative about his accepting the OBE. Furthermore, to put...

Re: Elvis Costello OBE

The process in its shorter form can take around 6- 9 months (there are exceptions where e.g. a sports team wins a big international tournament, then there is some fast tracking). I have an uneasy feeling that ECs (mis) reported illness last summer may have been the trigger for this. Ulster Boy wins...

Because Universal lied about it for years and the recent NYT article is the first widely published, comprehensive account.

Sort of timely, too, as "Performance" was directed by Nicholas Roeg, who recently departed this plane of existence. Here's how the song appeared in the movie:

Re: Accidents/Arizona/ Mexico etc.

I think I might have solved this mystery. Back when we had this discussion, I had the idea that EC probably was correctly remembering having an unhappy tryst with a Tucson taxi driver and then skulking back to his hotel feeling like a miserable, no-good, philandering bastard and writing a song abou...

Re: New Elvis/Burt Bacharach songs!!

I'm too lazy to go hunt for it now, but I do remember Elvis saying, in an interview that came out shortly before news of the new album broke, that he was itching to record some of the new songs he'd written with Burt.

Close...but, i give closest to mirroring Elvis' career to PAUL WELLER!!! I can see that POV, but I was thinking of audience size/reach as well as creative output. Paul Weller doesn't really have a career to speak of in the US. David Byrne fills the same sized, and sometimes the exact same, halls as...

Thanks for posting, ice nine. I was reflecting recently that Byrne was probably EC's most direct peer: "new wave" (quote-unquote) star who just kept moving creatively. I'm going to try to check out Byrne's show when it comes to my town, if I can get a decent ticket.

The supect the humor may have been largely visual. The footage doesn't capture said guy, but he may have been notably goofy-looking/acting.
