Elvis Costello has an enormous head...

Or a normal size head and really tiny baby hands.

Possibly both?

Yeah, this is just the symphony trying to drum up some extra sponsorship cash. Get your name printed in a program that nobody reads and what not.

Now that's not very punk rock, is it? <Sighs>
Maybe it's some sort of punk rock irony thing?

Word. This was my first Elvis show and I'm not the least bit disappointed. I was real skeptical about the Il Sogno suite. It was better than I expected. Obviously that's not what anybody was really there to hear, but it moved along quickly enough, had some nice jazzy moments, and best of all, Elvis ...

This will be my first Elvis show of any kind, and I'm quite excited.

Houstonites, what time do you recommend getting to the venue? Would 30 minutes in advance do the trick, or do you recommend more?

I must be living in Bizzaroworld... I quite like some of these. 1. Living In Paradise (especially after hearing a couple of demo versions) 2. Moods For Moderns (how can anything from this album make a 'worst of' list?!) 3. Sneaky Feelings (ditto with #2!) 4. B Movie (bit of a slow burn on an album c...

This is non-negotiable!!! ...Let's do it! 1. New Lace Sleeves 2. Shipbuilding 3. Oliver’s Army 4. Man Out Of Time 5. Riot Act 6. Brilliant...

Thanks for contributing, Dr. Luther. Good thoughts, good thoughts. The only Honky Tonk Demo material I've heard is what Rhino has re-issued on their bonus discs. I need to get my hands on more of that stuff. Obviously Elvis did his best work with The Attractions backing him, but I dunno man, there's...

You know, none of those songs are my favorites by any stretch of the imagination... and I'm sure we could easily come up with at least 10 more bad Elvis songs if we so desired... But I dunno, I still kinda dig these: Why Can't a Man Stand Alone Chewing Gum Pads, Paws and Claws Far from essential, no...

I'm not at all familiar with this guy. But I'm picking up a sort of Jon Brion vibe from him.

I think I like it.

Listening to the Flip City Demos...

(Okay, I know I'm like 30+ years late on this... be nice) These are really quite fascinating recordings. Besides just the inherent coolness of it all (Third Rate Romance is honky tonky storytelling at its finest...plus those horns and handclaps on 'Pay it Back' really cook), I think what interests m...

While 'Button My Lip' might be one of the weaker songs from Delivery Man, I still think it serves its purpose as a solid mission statement to kick off an album with. '45' would probably get my vote as well. Love the song, just think it's a bit misplaced. Picking a favorite is tricky, too. I'd say it...

I also love the simple sadness of Secondary Modern - such a tight little arrangement, with the understated vocal, building up to that melancholy "Nobody makes me sad like you - now my whole world goes from blue to blu-u-ue" And the little drum roll before it, after the fab middle eight. A...

Well, I think in general Elvis tends to overpower songs when he sings on them. Which, in general, I dig. But I'm sorry, one man just isn't overpowering an orchestra. There's no way. So what we're left with, at least in my opinion, is a bit of a power struggle. The clash makes for some pretty interes...

Thanks, VG. I've been poking around the set lists and what not, trying to get an idea of what to expect. That's sort of what led me to this site in the first place. And the performance I'll be seeing is in Houston, TX in mid-April. I was a little surprised to learn that this particular tour would be...

so what can I expect from this Il Sogno tour?

I've decided to bite the bullet and endure an hour or two of Elvis Costello's Il Sogno* in order to hear "a collection of his pop and rock hits." Should be a pretty interesting night of music, I'm thinking. * Now in all fairness, I haven't heard Il Sogno yet. It could be good. I'm definite...

Ah, that blogger would be me. Thanks for the props, guys. It was those Erik Larsen years in Spider-Man (late 80s/early 90s) that introduced me to Costello, and since then I've always had a fascination with not only his music, but also the way he keeps coming up in the funny pages time and time again...
