Re: Twilight of the Gods

I persist in my belief that 1978-to-1983 was the most exiting, most fruitful and most brilliantly innovative period for popular music ever. But then, I turned fourteen in 1978 and went to college in 1982, so I probably would think that, wouldn't I! :) Yeah, I was aged 10 to 15 during that period an...

Interesting. But why was he not telling the truth about the Mexico story? I don't get that.

I love 'Accidents' - it's got to be a top-tenner, I think.

Re: Twilight of the Gods

Great piece of writing, Hawksmoor. Yeah, it was a golden era for musicians - when they stopped being wandering mistrels and could become millionaires. That's probably gone forever now that streaming for pennies is the thing - no-one will be able to become so wealthy off music again. The artists who ...

Brilliant interview with Mark Billingham - I loved his enthusiasm. I wonder how often new ones are going to be posted? Be interesting to see who Stewart gets in to chat with.

Eh? I don't get what your issue is, fellas. The intention is to parody 1950s comics/cheap novels, so surely they've more than succeeded in their aim?

Re: New single “Newspaper Pane”, October 16, 2020

This one kind of floats past - it feels like a mood, rather than a melody - a very down, depressed mood. It's like 'We're All Cowards Now' in that regard. One of Elvis's strengths for me has been his gift for really catchy melodies, but I think he's aiming for something different in these songs.

Matthew McManus?

Anyone know if this is the son of Elvis? Probably not - I presume he was in his 40s in 2012 when this clip was uploaded: https://youtu.be/Rb7yD-dQw_Y - and this guy looks to be in his 20s.

Re: "Shut Him Down" - single by Michael Leonhart Orchestra, Elvis Costello & JSWISS

This sounds great, apart from there's something about the lyrics and pitch that make them hard to make out.

Does anyone else expect Elvis suddenly to burst out:

"Because I'm baaad
I'm bad
Ya know it
Because I'm baaad
I'm bad
Ya know it "

Shamon.

Hi MOOT - yes, I know this clip well. I find it a bit laid back, not a tight performance, and Elvis looks bored singing it. Still, always great to see the young Attractions. We were all thin once!

I now LOVE this song! On first listen his voice struck me as ragged. But now that I'm used to the song, I don't even notice it, and think it all sounds great. It's such a great, old-fashioned melody and the playing from everyone and the production are fantastic. How about that piano sound? How about...

Re: New song “Hey Clockface / How Can You Face Me’, sept 11, 2020

Agreed Elvis's voice is showing signs of age now, but there's nothing anyone can do about that - it happens to everyone (apart from Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey - not saying that cos they come from The Land of Song, it just seems that their voices refuse to lose their power). I think this song is en...

Re: Blood and Chocolate Survivor - Results

Well it is a great song. And I'm glad 'I Want You' didn't win. I don't hate 'I Want You' - it's an entirely successful song at what Elvis was trying to do - it's amazing. But I just can't bear to listen to such a negative, sinister song very often. At least 'I Hope You're Happy Now' has humour in th...

Now it can be told - I would have been happy for any of these to have been top: Blue Chair Next Time Round Crimes of Paris They are just so incredibly melodic, poppy and joyous, undercut by the dark lyrics. I heart them. The verses pull you in, the choruses are INCREDIBLE and the middle eights are o...

Re: Blood and Chocolate Survivor - Round 8

It had to go eventually, but it's such a brilliant, brilliant song. I always see this as Elvis's view of his songwriting persona - taking the mickey out of his twisted love songs. But is anyone listening any more, he wonders: "The world has wiped its mouth since then - or maybe it was yawning.&...
