Re: Trust Survivor - Results

Really hard to call this, but I guess New Lace Sleeves is just a fraction better. Hard to compare such different songs though! But the slow burn of the song is always so mesmerising, as is the sadness and cynicism of the whole thing. Brilliant, brilliant song.

Just voted. We can see the results for the remaining songs so it's pretty clear what's going to win.

Re: Trust Survivor - Round 10

'You'll Never Be A Man' is a copper-bottomed classic and is far better than 'Watch Your Step'. Watch Your Step is such a nasty little number (deliberately), whereas You'll Never Be A Man is one of Elvis's most joyous songs, I reckon. AND STEVE'S PIANO!!!! Blissfully lilting, tiptoeing, wandering and...

Re: Trust Survivor - Round 9

Not happy about this result. Strict Time is such an incredible rhythmic/melodic tumbling ride through the hills on an out of control train. Watch Your Step is fantastic but it doesn't thrill like Strict Time. That song continues the shocking violence featured on the album - 'broken noses hung up on ...

Re: Trust Survivor - Round 8

Big Sister's Clothes - what a weird and wonderful song. I mean, what is that intro? It's brilliant. And the opening line is typical Elvis Costello: 'Sheep to the slaughter - oh, I thought this must be love.' Typical juxtaposition of sour and sweet. And some classic Costello - 'she's got eyes like sa...

Well, "Steve's twinkly bits" isn't exactly Lester Bangs but thank you for the compliment, BA!

Re: Trust Survivor - Round 6

From a Whisper is fabulous and I love the pairing of Glenn's angelically sweet voice and Elvis's brutal barnstorming. White Knuckles is an astounding arrangment, melody, the playing, the singing. I love the way the vocal starts, like the melody has dropped out of the air. Steve's twinkly bits and th...

Re: Trust Survivor - Round 5

So Different Finger has been given the finger. Love that song, what a classically-written country song, superb little gem. Still, it's a modest song, and there are more majestic numbers on this album that mean it was never gonna win. But what a great song about lying to yourself. The image is a bril...

Re: Trust Survivor - Round 4

Wooo - I agree that Pretty Words should be an early exit - I mean, Elvis's lesser songs are still packed with great stuff - lyrically and with what the Attractions are doing, there's lots to enjoy, but the melody isn't his usual captivating, lapel-grabbing best. Lover's Walk, though, that's a real h...

The obvious choice is on it's way out first hurdle by the looks of the current voting. Is there any way you can switch off the voting results until very the end of the poll? It would be good to vote without knowing the general consensus. That said, no worries at all of course if you can't switch tha...

Re: Armed Forces Survivor - Results

I know polls like this are not necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but I don't find them a negative thing, they're a poll about what's best from an amazing list of songs, rather than an assassination of the unapproved songs. As an unashamed Elvis geek, I am happy to see them continue as kind of day b...

Bedlam is another of those, you are right. I did think about putting it down but forgot. I was like you with Bedlam, (Cousin Pete doesn't like it either) but one night I was Powerwalking from Liverpool Street to Stratford with the iPod classic on shuffle when Pete's drums came crashing in and I had...

Re: New song ‘Hetty O’Hara Confidential’, July 10, 2020

I agree I don't think Elvis and Weller were every really friends probably more to do with both of them being grumpy bastards. :D LOL Sheep! I like most of Elvis's stuff in general but I agree there's the odd occasion when the tumble of words is too much, like there's no room to breathe. But of cour...

Re: Armed Forces Survivor - Results

I voted for Accidents to win but it was such a close run thing. Both fantastic songs. I went with Accidents cos it's got that heartbreaking mood, deeply sad yet somehow uplifting melody. And there's just something about that chorus that's magical - I never tire of this song.

Re: New song ‘Hetty O’Hara Confidential’, July 10, 2020

I agree, Verbal. I've had a couple of listens and there's a chaotic, crockery-set-in-a-box-tumbling-down-the-stairs vibe that I can't get into - and the verbosity bothers me too. The hook line doesn't quite sit for me. That said it's definitely interesting new work and I'll give it some more spins! ...

When you see the way this is panning out, the top two are not going to have a Rizla paper between them! This top 5 is definitely the 'right' top 5, I reckon!
