Re: Spike: 30 years ago

Last Boat Leaving is one of my favourite Elvis songs. Although it is not what the songs about it makes me think of when I got divorced ( we split in 1990) and the lyric 'you've taken the place where I once belonged now what more can you take' is one of my favourite Elvis lines. Those who know me wi...

Re: Spike: 30 years ago

Nice little soundbites, John. I remember seeing the press release for 'Spike' in the NME and being really excited. God, the wait since Blood & Choc had seemed like a lifetime! It had a lot of coverage - I remember the Radio 1 Breakfast team going on about it, there was the Sarah McLeod interview...

Re: Elvis on youtube volume 42

This is new to me, and something of a mystery: Elvis playing "Pads, Paws & Claws" solo on an acoustic guitar sitting in a window. DiBj-xuSmVU The poster - Trygve Østbye says in the comments that this clip is from "Norwegian television, program called Rock '89. They did a special ...

Re: Elvis when you least expect it

I can't find mention of it here but I've just watched The Trip with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, series 3 (in Spain) episode 2. Brydon sings 'Toldeo" in a Costello-like way and Coogan gives 'Oliver's Army' a blast - neither very good but great fun. Here's the clip: https://www.youtube.com/watc...

Re: Look Now: new album announced!

Stephen Averill , who designed sleeves for Elvis when Elvis was based here in Dublin, made an interesting point about the sleeve of Look Now. Chatting with me before a recent gig by his band Trouble Pilgrims, he said he likes the lettering and the painting but thinks they don't look good together. ...

Re: Look Now: new album announced!

I also think that the longer gap between records and the health scare stories (in the wake of the shocking loss of artists like Bowie and Prince and Tom Petty, etc) helped a lot of critics stop taking EC for granted the way it felt a lot of them were around the time of National Ransom (which seemed...

Re: Favourite lyrical assonance

Haha! Thanks for pointing it out: seems I put the 'ass' into 'assonance' (among other things)!

Okay, alliteration - or any rhymey kinda stuff that just chimes nicely.

I guess the whole chorus of 'New Amsterdam' might qualify...

Favourite lyrical alliteration (formerly assonance!)

(If assonance is the right word. All I mean is, the way the vowels and consonants are spaced to create a bit of a thrill of pleasure. Not the same as favourite lyric, necessarily.)

Anyway, my favourite is:

Yep, and if Elvis does read this - thank you for all your wonderful songs, and please don't give up on the PFM show! It sounds like a moody classic. Places like The Crucible, Sheffield or the Chichester Festival Theatre (artistic director Daniel Evans who often supports new musicals) might take it, ...
