Re: "The Worst of Elvis Costello"

Off the top of my head I've never liked Invasion Hit Parade, Coal Train Robberies, Sweet Pear, White Knuckles,LetMe Tell You About Her. Then there's the overrated songs like When I Was Cruel 2 and I Want You (yes, I said I Want You). But this is the fun thing about taste because I love Lovers' Walk,...

Re: A team of 'Elvis Costello Fans' needed for BBC tv quiz

I was contacted by these people today saying there's an audition Friday of next week if anyone is interested. It doesn't suit me to be honest. Anyone???

Re: One Bell. Ringing mp3

I thought it was a good song on the night, but he does have a lot of songs about windows, birds and bells, doesn't he? Maybe somebody on the board could do some kind of thesis or doctorate on it: "Tapping at the Pane: Windows, Birds & Bells in the Work of Declan MacManus"

Re: Elvis on One show next week

Hello Otis! Yes I do loiter on the Word board a lot these days... The TV show you're on about, I've Never Seen Star Wars, is despicable. It's hosted by the punchable Marcus Brigstoke, a concave-faced talent-vacuum who's kinda like Stephen Fry but without the ability, humour, grace, style, brain or s...

Re: Elvis on One show next week

I thought the show was rather lovely. The One Show is very cosy and parocial, but popular, and also odd with incongrous guests and reports. I'm sure EC is comfortable with people commenting on his glasses (ref. EC in The SImpsons) and enjoyed his delight when he realised what clip of Ross was about ...

Momofuku Graphs!

Picked up the album, on vinyl, at the weekend and it's the most satisfying record since ATUB. In many ways it's son of Brutal Youth. I've been trying to put my finger on the many echoes of other songs on the album that I thought it might help to do it in graph form... http://i16.photobucket.com/albu...

Holloway Road has loads of Indian restaurants and is nice and grimey. Our local (until we move next week) is the Bengal Spice, which is friendly, fresh and great value. At the Archway end of Holloway Road is the Sitara, which is a Jazz Indian. We've eaten there once, the theme is Indian Fod with Jaz...

Woops, sorry Dr J, picked you up wrong. I'm afraid I'm one of those musical snobs who feel Billy hasn't done anything decent since The Stranger, though The Nylon Curtain does have its moments. No problem! My love of the Innocent Man album is in part due to the fact that it was the first proper albu...

Saw the reformed Crowded House twice in the last month. First time in Hyde Park co-headlining with Peter Gabriel where they were fantastic. Great sound but into their last 20 minutes they got rained off by some serious horriffic, dire, horrible rain. Clouds about to lash seen here: http://uk.youtube...

That review hits the nail on the head. Compare McCartney's solo career to, say, Elton John's, which began around the same time. Now EJ gets cuts slack repeatedly for lacklustre records, whereas Paul has to always go against the Beatles legend. If every record released was compared to the Beatles, we...

Ahhh, the Macca secret gig was just down the road from where I live and I was utterly convinced that I would win the online competition, oh well. Thought he was quite good on Later, although they wouldn't be my favourite two songs from MAF. What was fun was Jools Holland's joy when he was playing La...

I love discussing the Macca back catalogue. I understand the allergic reaction that Silly Love Songs triggers in some people but a few words in its defence: It's a metasong! It deconstructs the form and dissociates it from love. He begins by asking whats wrong with "Silly Love Longs", by t...
