Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

Is it me or is the vinyl a poor pressing? It sounds like the maxed out CD master pressed straight to vinyl without being mastered specifically. It often sounds muffled and the opening track has a very distorting, crunchy sound. Is it possible they skimped on quality control because of the unexpected...

Re: Your Top 25 Albums of the '00s (and Top 10 of 2009)

Ooooh. A lists thread. Can I play, but a little late? I did a top 40 for the Noughties over on my blog (really sorry about this, all three of my posts this evening make me seem like a spammer - some people here will be able to vouch for the fact that I'm not) 40. Dan Arborise – Around In Circles 39....

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Having been lured back over by the thread in the EC section about 'North', I thought I should nip back to my old favourite thread. It's been a while! Hope everyone's well. Currently alternating between the wonderful new album by Smiths fans Northern Portrait and A Girl Called Eddy's sole album. http...

Re: Excellent North review from Word

Well, that's one way to lure me back here! Nice to see a few people have clicked through to the blog itself. I was never aware of the original, and really rather splendidly titled, post, so it's nice to see that. I'm briefly pointing to a download of A Girl Called Eddy's cover of 'Baby Plays Around'...

Well, you'd better sort that out as 'Songs From Northern Britain' is even better.

How did I miss this thread? Just saw a small advert in the back of the new Mojo and dashed over to the Symphony Hall site. Managed to get seats in the circle, smack bang in the middle. Surprised how many were still available for purchase.

Well, I can vouch for the quality of all but the Neko Case. Not heard that one yet, but the others are all rather charming, particularly M. Ward.

Re: New TV show: "Spectacle: Elvis Costello with ..."

I thought the Smokey episode was outstanding, by far the best episode shown thus far in the UK. Admittedly, most of this is down to the quality of the guest, but I would agree with the earlier comment about Elvis seeming more relaxed and at ease. Robinson was a fabulous raconteur throughout and the ...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

They're OK. A poppier Jesus and Mary Chain etc. Hard to feel it's that exciting or new when you've been around the block, but cool for the teens and worth checking out. Like the cover too. Blue: if I dig 'Life Itself', which I do, will I dig it all? I've been watching and am now listening to: http:...

Elvis on 33 1/3 proposals list again

This time around, Continuum publishers have allowed people to pitch on artists already given a 33 1/3 title, so even though 'Armed Forces' is already out there, 'Imperial Bedroom' has been pitched by a couple of people. Anyone here? The full list can be found on this post from the 33 1/3 blog. I may...

Re: Best Albums of 2008

Ah there you are! A typically arresting list with several I've never heard of at all or only vaguely: 8, 11, 12, 15, 19, and several I know the names but not the music. More fun with you tube and my space ahead. I have the feeling you too would love the Lambchop CD if you heard it. Maybe you have. ...

Joan As Police Woman's second - a Bad Ambassador fave (where's he gone? another absentee). Only hear a couple, sounds good. Evening! Hope all's well with you. Have been busy, but just finished my end of year list, so I thought I'd add it on this thread. Still not entirely sure about the order of th...

Joan As Police Woman - To Survive First ref I've seen to her here. The LP has had a lot of praise. I'v heard one song, which was good. Saw her live (supporting Rufus) March '05, and she was good. What are your impressions of this one? It's a wonderful record, better than the first (and that was gre...

Again, in no particular order, these are the 2008 releases getting played the most round these parts: Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid (this is probably my No.1, if I had to choose) Laura Marling - Alas, I Cannot Swim Paul Weller - 22 Dreams Portishead - Third Pete Molinari - A Virtual Landslide Bon Iver...

http://www.muzzleofbees.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/bon-iver.jpg Beautiful album, self-recorded in a cabin in rural Wisconsin. It reminds me a bit of Iron & Wine. Definitely in that same sort of stripped-down folky vein. Very good stuff. Complete agree. Fabulous record. First play here for a...

It's a good little set this. If you can't be bothered with internet delivery times then Zavvi are knocking it out for a very reasonable £14 on the high street. The Costello performance is excellent, really seems to be enjoying himself. Anyone got the other performances he did on the show to promote ...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Great record, WSS. Oddly overlooked as it came out a little bit before the British retro boom sparked by Winehouse. Some fantastic tunes on it.
