Blimey, it's like a high school reunion! Well big congrats. Lovely to hear. What's his first name? I guess he hasn't got much choice but to love his middle-nakmesake! I can tell you too ways you've been in my collective mind in recent months, both connected to CDs you kindly sent (back in that pre-...

Re: Did we celebrate this forum's 10th birthday?

Hello darlings! Someone told me I was name-checked on this thread—I'm not, but I'm sure I'm right at the back of your collective mind, no? Anyway, my big news is that I have a three-month-old baby boy whose middle name is Elvis. ("miss buenos aires" was my username on a dating site back in...

Re: books, books, books

mood - let's get together and compare notes on list books we are getting rid of. Or--do you do BookMooch? I am reading Pat Barker's Regeneration , which I am finding very good, if disgusting (what is it about World War I? Was it really the most disgusting war ever? WWI novels always have so much gro...

You could buy an (illegal) cell phone jammer. It's not like you'd get caught if you only use it for an hour a week, right?

It seems like a bonus disc to me, maybe because of the inclusion of "Complicated Shadows" and "Hidden Shame."

Re: Best of 2009 -so far

I couldn't listen to any of the tracks listed, but I love the new Decemberists album, The Hazards of Love. Love it! Also couldn't stop listening to Franz Ferdinand's Tonight, and I've got the new PJ Harvey waiting for me when I get home.

Re: Recently viewed films

I've heard God of Carnage is excellent—I've never seen Art , which was also written by Yasmine Reza, but I read it for a class and enjoyed it. I have a friend who can sometimes get discounted theater tickets, so I'm hoping her connection comes through for God of Carnage and the West Side Story reviv...

Re: books, books, books

Yes, mood, I agree (that you should take my advice on books to read). Recent listies: The Radiant Way (okay, but I am not terribly interested in the characters, and can only tell them apart with the greatest of difficulty), La porte étroite (so, Gide won a Nobel Prize, eh? For literature, or somethi...

Re: Recently viewed films

I just saw Sunshine Cleaning in the theater, and enjoyed it. It's a film about two sisters stuck in dead-end jobs who start their own crime scene cleanup business. It's marketed as a comedy, but it's not, really—all the jokes got put in the trailer. Flawed, but worth seeing. By the way, I started a ...

Re: Twitter, anyone?

The annoying aspect to Twitter (i.e. why I feel entitled to be curmudgeonly about it): a couple of months ago, I was at a small party, and one of the guests (who is usually very polite), kept taking time out to tweet about what she was doing at the party. It's like, you're doing something fun! You c...

Wow, I am SO not looking forward to the prospect of a $103 monthly Metrocard. It makes me want to move back to Jersey out of spite.

And, of course, because New Jersey's where America's at!

Re: books, books, books

Been focusing on the List lately... The Black Dahlia , London Fields , In Cold Blood (all about murders, which was kind of a downer). Then I lightened things up by reading Evelina, or the History of a Young Lady's Entry into the World . So very 19th-century, what with the epistolary format and outra...

Sad! Well, now that you have the login, you can practice? Everything I know about sports, I learned from crosswords. Especially everything I know about Moises Alou and Mel Ott. I have no idea who they are, but they sure crop up in crosswords a lot.

Re: Recently viewed films

First up was Ghost Town (starring Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinnear and Tea Leoni) on DVD. Red and I are both big fans of Gervais' work on Extras and The Office , but after seeing the previews for this one we were a bit concerned that it would be a romantic comedy with a majorly toned-down Gervais in the...

Re: Random Thoughts

Two random thoughts:

1- I just finished the Saturday NY Times puzzle in 11 minutes, 10 seconds. I am immensely smug about this.

2- I just saw two squirrels out my window, one of whom was trying to stick his face in the other's butt. It was pretty adorable.

Ooh yeah, that'[s another unread one on my shelf, and all say they love it. Today the Guardian did comedy. Had to write to complain to my friend, chiefly due to the disgraceful omission of any Flann O'Brien, surely way up there as one of the funniest writers ever. Still, their genre based approach ...

Well, imagine you had just bought a camcorder, and you were walking around with it and talking to people, and then you were in the middle of a huge hurricane, and filming that. It was so shaky, I felt like I was on a ship.

Re: books, books, books

Otis, that was a brilliant pitch. You've won me over. Pynchon is next on the list after I finish all I've got. I'm trying to read at least 25 new books this year, so it would be really cool to discover a new author whose catalogue I could devour. Don't feel like you have to like it, though--a lot o...
