Re: EC on The Colbert Report, March 8, 2012

Thanks for posting this. Pretty neat stuff.

Elvis and Colbert are getting along famously these days. If you're going to have a friend high up in the business, Colbert seems like a pretty darn good one to have.

Re: all this useless beauty: vinyl

The only vinyl copy currently for sale on Discogs is selling for about $41 USD (plus shipping). It's shipping from a seller in Germany who says it's in near mint condition. The listing if anyone is interested: http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?release_id=1931021&ev=rb I'd spring for it but I have...

Re: The Top 25

Stumbled across this thread in a search and figured it could use a bump. For each of us I'm sure there are personal and very circumstantial reasons we attach ourselves to certain songs, recordings or performances so I won't try to explain my choices. I will try to put them in chronological order, an...

Love your analysis of a song very moving and evocative. I'm partial to another another ballad from the same era—if you could call it a ballad, which I think I would—in Why Can't a Man Stand Alone? Examining man's relationship with himself and the burdens of society, and weighing it against how he co...

Re: Other artists' songs that remind you of EC

I was listening to the new album by indie punk band Bomb the Music Industry (I'm a huge fan) and was struck by how much their song "Vocal Coach" sounds like something out of This Year's Model or Armed Forces. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izdScR05MBg Are there any other songs from other ...

Re: The wonder of the game!

We lost a good one today. Funny you mention his sheer infectious love of the game. MLB.com posted this clip today of Carter's last at bat. Among other great details—Harry Caray's perfect call, the fact that the ball sailed just over the glove of one Andre Dawson, that it was a go-ahead hit—his react...

Re: How 'bout them Grammys?

Prefer to save my money and put it towards a good ballgame later in the season as pitchers and catchers begin to report to camps in less than a week's time. I'm with you on that. I'm hoping to put together enough to make a road trip to Houston this summer to see the Reds play in that pretty ballpar...

Re: How 'bout them Grammys?

McCartney's new material was insipid-flat out boring and if that is indicative of the rest of the new album it would seem to be a big waste of money and time. I checked out the tracklist and it appears that the song he sang was one of only a few original tunes on the album. The rest are Tin Pan All...

Re: How 'bout them Grammys?

Don't disagree with a whole lot said here. In the Beach Boys tribute, I thought Maroon 5 was quite a bit better than Foster the People. I think Maroon 5 is a better band than their recent singles lead on. They aren't great, but they're very good at what they do, and what they do can sometimes be fai...

Take the Money and Run is a classic. Bananas is pretty good too. Bananas is on the queue for tonight, as a matter of fact. I've decided I'm going to watch each Allen film in its order of release. It'll take a while, and I'll see more than a few movies I'd already seen before, but I think it'll be w...

Anybody know of a place I could see the '91 performances now that they've been pulled from Vimeo? I've been on a big MLAR kick this week and would love to see them.

Re: Recently viewed films

I just saw Woody Allen's first written- and directed-by film last night. "Take the Money and Run." I understand it's the first widely released film to use the mockumentary format. It was truly hilarious. It was made 42 years ago and all of the comedy still holds up. It's pure slapstick, an...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

First, let me tip my hat to Christopher's citation of Jill Barber. This world-class artist is so neglected that she is reduced to doing gigs in my obscure little chunk of suburban Vancouver and toiling in the dubious vineyards of what's called 'CanCon' (i.e., government-subsidized Canadian culture)...

Re: Elvis Costello's Armed Forces (33 1/3) - Franklin Bruno

I finally got around to reading the book, and it is excellent. It's given me a renewed appreciation for what the album accomplished; partially because I learned so much about its backdrop and some of the more specific musical nuances, and partially because what I was able to recall so much of my per...

Re: 'Sparkling Day' by Elvis - Oscar nomination?

The song from The Muppets was pretty fantastic. I saw the film and would have understood if any of its original songs were nominated, especially the one chosen. Very clever. Apt enough for the younger audience for which the movie was partially intended, and oddly moving enough for the adults that co...

This Wilco iTunes Session was just released, and it was a pleasant surprise since I preordered it a few weeks ago and forgot all about it until I was notified about an hour ago that it had automatically downloaded to my library. http://itunes.apple.com/album/itunes-session/id494392725?v0=9988&ig...

Thirded on Shabby Doll.

I enjoy Mystery Dance as heard on MAIT, but every clip I've heard of it live (and the once I've seen that song live in person) are exponentially better. It's just a good, lively live-setting song. And Steve Naive keyboard solo > (John McFee?) guitar solo.
