Never managed to get the Arcade Fire thing. Tried really hard. Same with Grizzly Bear.

Currently re-discovering my love of Sinatra's 'In the Wee Small Hours'. Superb....and as cool as it gets.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Good points Otis and I'm glad you liked the PS album.

Apparently the budget for Crimson/Red was miniscule and he made the whole thing himself. Part of me wonders if the real reason wasn't his famed hatred of trying to express to others what he wants in the studio!

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Mysterious (tune above) by Paddy is about Bob Dylan. The Songs of Danny Conway is about Jimmy Webb (another great songster hero of mine). Interesting that Otis talks about the simplicity of Paddy's songs. I would concur and that is exactly what I love about them. The combination of his gorgeous voic...

Well, my only issue with the version of CS on SP&S is that I never really liked the song that much anyway...in any version. Felt the same about Hidden Shame.

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Well, I'm not saying I can't appreciate other musical styles and there's lots about WUG that really really like. Besides EoB does have a really catchy chorus to offset the 'Elvo-Rap' :-) Ultimately I think it's a case of you like something or you don't. One should always respect another's view and I...

Green Song or Birds will Still be Singing are the obvious choices....might go for Tramp the Dirt Down to be a contrary old git.

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Interesting discussion...although I am blown away by any criticism of Episode of Blonde (blaring, tiresome verses????....really?). The only think I can add to this debate is that the album lacks melody, which for me is what EC has always done best. Maybe, like ET, I am not that much into funk but th...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

I remember that conversation Otis. A great show that one! I was really disappointed with' Let's Change the World with Music' due to it's awful early 90s production values. This is bona fide great stuff from Paddy. I just love the man's gorgeous voice and his wonderful melodies. Have a listen to this...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

The new Prefab Sprout (Paddy on his own really) is absolutely superb....like he's never been away. I'm blown away that someone can make a record like this despite being half bind and three quarters deaf....and yet still sounding as beautiful as he did thirty years after the classic Steve McQueen (Th...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

But did you get the Deluxe version? Hey, it's the return of Jackson Monk! Good to see you round here. Of course Otis! I admire the record much more that SP&S (which I found very hard to like) and it is more appealing than RIR and TDM, both of which I enjoyed but neither got into my heart in the...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

I've had the album on rotation since it arrived and I concur that the new tracks interest most. I love Tripwire but it has been waking my head up at 3am which is not helpful. Overall, I see it as an interesting addition to his catalogue which I may return to periodically. However, it does seem like ...

Re: 1984, Goodbye Cruel World sleevenote

I agree. For me, this was unfairly maligned because it wasn't to the standard of what came before. It's got some great songs and some wonderful lyrics. Worthless Thing, Home Truth, Deportee Club, The Comedians, Inch by Inch and Peace in Our Time are all great songs.

Re: A Case for Song: "Pretty Words"

I haven't looked at the lyrics since I bought 'The Singing Dictionary' in the mid 80s and it's amusing how much I'd got wrong. I always assumed that he sang But there's not much choice (there's not much choice (repeated) Between a cruel man and a jealous boy However, in my opinion one of my mistakes...

Re: 'Elvis Costello - In Motion Pictures', Nov. '12

Normally I don't pay any attention to compilations and happily ignore the 1-2 'bonus' tracks usually tagged on as a lure for the hard-core. But I think this one is actually a rather canny compilation, inasmuch as I - a big fan but never a completist - don't have several of these songs in my collect...

Well, I hadn't hoped for much because they rarely get mentioned and I thought the quality of the recordings would be poor. That's why I was surprised. Cracking stuff.

Last week I downloaded the Flip City demo and realised why I fell in love with EC's music all those years ago. Surprisingly excellent....
