R.I.P. Grace Paley

Fantastic writer and activist. I didn't know she'd been ill for a long time. Hope she didn't suffer horribly. R.I.P.

That middle one sounded familiar but I googled it and it's not something I know. Sadly I woke up with the new Oasis song in my head. Damn catchy, even if it is another Beatles derivative.

Oh, and Carr's Ginger Lemon Creme cookies should be a controlled substance.

Having worked for the same employer for 18 years, I just applied for a new job somewhere else. >ulp< Terrifying and exciting. If I get it, it will be the first job I've had at a non-non-profit since 1984. It's a (very) long shot, but what the hell. As the old lottery commercials used to say, "Y...

I would only buy something like that (not that I'd dare spend that much) if I knew it could be refunded... ...we only paid £140 not £170 Ahh, but see, you did spend that much and didn't know it could be refunded-- that a bit of it was refunded was sheer windfall! What you mean to say is, you thin...

Vodka Gimlet with extra water and ice in a tall glass. Refreshing on these hot summer nights. Yum. Vodka gimlets are a fave of mine. Make me one, please. Another crisp, sour fave is vodka + grapefruit juice, which for some reason is called a Greyhound. Fits, somehow, no? As to Margaritas, I have an...

Ah, I see. Thought it was a 30-yrs-ago-today thing. **** I just saw a razor blade ad with Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, and Thierry Henry . Jeeze, first it was immigrants cleaning our floors, now it's French soccer players selling us Schick (or was it Gillette?). The new world order has arrived. (Spea...

I have a feeling he was talking about the original Elvis. Serious fan though I am, I don't think I'd mention our Elvis as a candidate for greatest musician of all time (nor Elvis P., for that matter, but I'd be less surprised to hear people suggest Presley than Costello). On a related note, I rememb...

PS, if you're actually looking for an IDEA, here's mine, if you've got about $350 to spend. I'd get her an Hermès scarf-- super luxe, but easily worn with a denim or leather jacket, and really warm (silk) in your cold part of exurbia. This is heirloom-quality stuff, she'll pass it on to your daught...

My tenth wedding anniversary was a bit of a disaster, the beginning of the end, really (we made it to thirteen). Very bittersweet in retrospect, but I've got very few regrets about it. My Ex is getting re-married in October. Again with the bittersweet... http://www.moodsofnature.com/18_200_tests/42m...

Why is it that, no matter my diligence and care when applying sunblock, the backs of my knees always always burn?

As someone whose skin is glow-in-the-dark pale, I keep a bottle of aloe gel in the fridge for just such occasions-- ahhhhhhhhh-- but I'd just as soon never need it again.

I'm not a big fan of Pitchfork because I feel that too often the reviewers are trying to show off and let everyone know how smart and "with it" they are. I felt the same way about Magnet, for which I had high hopes as it comes from mellow Philadelphia. Annoying as hell, isn't it? It's lik...

It would appear that this has not been a much-used thread.... oh well, it gives me an opportunity to give you a direct comparison, since the last pic was ALSO of my puppy. 1+ year later, weighing in at 65 pounds, I give you, ladies and gents, Hermione: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1015/974109922_1...

He was the consummate nerd-- i.e., he had the knack of making everyone seem cool by comparison. You always felt a bit embarrassed for him, even while being grateful he was talking to such a compelling guest. For example, check this . Here's one with a dentally incomplete James Westerberg discussing ...

I wouldn't miss Ladies Of The Canyon . Personally I like it as much as Blue , quite possibly more (heresy!). And, as I've mentioned oh, twenty or thirty times on this board, Shadows And Light is fantastic: a collection of some of her best songs, done live at what will surely be seen as the height of...
