Re: Elvis, solo, Manchester, 10 June 2015

It was John Cooper Clarke, yes. Good spot on the fluffed 45 intro that led to an early Oliver's Army, I thought something had happened to throw him off for a second but didn't realise that was it. It was a terrific show, less muted than his Bridgewater gig last year, energised no doubt by the highly...

Re: Elvis in Ron Sexsmith documentary , Oct. '10

but my problem with Ron Sexsmith is that he doesn't seem to have evolved much as a songwriter. I know exactly what you mean, maybe the lack of commercial success has inhibited his development. The film also makes clear he's not one to stray too far out of his comfort zone. I was struck by the simil...

Re: Elvis in Ron Sexsmith documentary , Oct. '10

Iplayer link available for the next few days.

It's an extremely moving and sensitive portrait with an illuminating sequence of Sexsmith back stage at Spectacle, frozen by nerves, getting a quick pep talk from a serene Sheryl Crow.

Uncut Magazine (April)

Elvis is the subject (again) of the Allan Jones column right at the back of the magazine - 'Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before', dated April 1989 in Dublin it's an interview about 'Tramp The Dirt Down' and which contains the intriguing quote 'I don't know much about Morrissey apart from the fac...

Re: When was your first Elvis gig?

October 15th 1977 - Leeds University - the Stiff tour. He came out when Dury was on and I managed to get his autograph on my first Barclays Bank cheque book. My main recollection of that night is an absolutely off-his-face Wreckless Eric.

Re: Suit Of Lights

I've always thought that song was, first, about being an artist in a world mediocrity. Only after he's dead is he appreciated - hence, the refrain. The lyric centres on a contrast between performers (who hear the 'working man's blues' and presumably want to sing them) wasting their breath, dying a ...

Suit Of Lights

Anyone have an insight into what this is about? And they pulled him out of the cold cold ground And they put him in a suit of lights I've twigged the references to Nat King Cole and Merle Haggard ('Working Man's Blues') Outside they're painting tar on somebody It's the closest to a work of art that ...

Re: Live At The El Mocambo to be re-released

Three out of five from David Cavanagh in Uncut. There are young people today who would find the dangerous Elvis Costello utterly implausible. What, that chummy chat-show host who writes operas in his spare time? Dangerous? But he was. Between 1977 and 1980, Costello would have thought nothing about ...

Re: Michael Jackson RIP

Thanks John for digging that out. You could question Jackson's presumption of guilt ("I don't dig that guy...") but as Elvis's contrition implies he seemed prepared to have to take it on the chin. I don't doubt that any attempt to contextualise the outburst would have been understandably i...

4 stars out of 5 from Phil Sutcliffe and Mojo. Costello takes his mighty word power back to Nashville Tough to match his Noughties triumphs When I Was Cruel, North and The Delivery Man , but Costello has again hauled material from diverse regions of his writing life - including the Hans Christian An...
