Back to Battered Old Bird...Ypsilanti, I don't really understand what you were saying about "the bottle of sweet sherry that everything redeems" - surely all it means is that once he's drunk, everything feels okay, he feels redeemed from all his sins. I do understand the idea Elvis puttin...

Re: Battered Old Bird

Battered Old Bird...one of my favorites. Gives me chills. Love the way the intensity keeps building... My favorite thing is a little detail in the lyrics... 'Til he chopped off the head of a visitor's child He danced upon the bonfire Swallowed sleeping pills like dreams With a bottle of sweet sherry...

Re: 'Sparkling Day' by Elvis on soundtrack for 'One Day' Aug

Sparkling Day: Finally listened to it. Upon first listen...not loving, really. For me, it seems like the vocal and the melody are at odds with each other. Perhaps the lyric is too wordy for the music to support the vocal properly. But I will give it another try... Power belting: Love it most of the ...

Does anyone else consider this one of the most absolutely gorgeous songs EC has ever written? I'm floored every time. While I like "Suffering Face" very much (gorgeous vocal), I am always bothered by... You don't need the same old rivet gun You need a brand new wrench ...which has got to ...

Re: songs Elvis should retire (if he hasn't already)

I actually count four different, recent versions of "Every Day I Write the Book". - The original "rock-lite" arrangement played by The Imposters recently. - The punky version posted by Natasha. - The Sugarcanes arrangement, with the modified chorus. - The solo acoustic version, ...

Very sad, indeed. Wonderful, though, that he lived to such a ripe age and Elvis got to enjoy the blessing of having a father, well into his own maturity...

Re: Your LEAST favorite Elvis song and why

anybody else mention Sunday's Best? Sunday's Best?  I'll mention that it's one of my very most beloved EC songs. C'mon...how can anyone dislike this one? It's funny, charming...one of EC's great, unusual "ice rink"-sounding songs--like nothing else I know of in the world of...

... The imagery swirls with playful fun. Love the rhyme 'thrillin' with 'villain'. The vibe is very Sixties nightclub, girls with straight hair, straight fringe, dancing like Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction or The Frug in Sweet Charity. Awesome, Neil!!! References to movies/film/cinema appear quite fre...

Jeez, BA...Coal Train Robberies is probably one of my top 5 favorites of all...but only the Rhino bonus version...it's a totally different song. Actually listening to that disk right now. Have to say the Rhino bonus disks for both Spike and GCW are among my favorites and most often played. Once all...

Re: Your LEAST favorite Elvis song and why

I love Go Away because it's Watching The Detectives, revisited, 30 years later... If Detectives is about the delicious experience of watching some sleazy, pulpy Film Noir movie, Go away is about watching a much fancier European detective movie--a movie, that while full of all the right details, is h...

Re: Your LEAST favorite Elvis song and why

Yps, I love You'll Never Be A Man. I always take it to be a character accusing him, Elvis, of not being man enough. I love the way he sees manhood as an exam you need to sit: "I don't wanna be first, I just want to pass." The melody, underpinned by Steve's amazing piano flourishes, is won...

Re: Your LEAST favorite Elvis song and why

I have no problem with Eisenhower Blues, especially since it's a cover...I assume it came out of the recording session with Ray Brown...some obscure old song they were all drunkenly chatting about in the studio and the next thing you know, it's on the record. Probably a nice memory for Elvis which h...

I’m so happy you like my thoughts about the show! Now, after two days I have strange tiny details stuck in my head...how he walked in...cold blue lights...the dramatic pause in Stations of the Cross...the relaxed bossa-nova beat of All or Nothing at All...the moment when I saw return of young Elvis...

The have been so many coincidences--I'm sure he is aware of the content of this site from time to time, but I'm also sure he never looks at himself. I imagine there is some poor unpaid intern at his management company who combs the internet for Elvis info and maybe Elvis eventually looks at a summer...

My Hub just pointed out the wheel was pre-set to Alison before the show started... That really was genius...almost no one shouted out requests throughout the entire show. Very polite & enthusiastic crowd. Maybe EC defused that tendency by getting the "hits" out of the way first. Or may...
