Elvis radio interview from Nov.'06 now online

Post by johnfoyle »

From listserv -

As you know the annual WUSB Elvis Costello Marathon is coming up next
Friday, November 10th from 2:30 - 11:30 pm EST (coordinates below).
Anyway, there'll be the usual playing of the obscure boots and hiding under
covers etc.

But that's not the big news.

Here it is: the man himself will be appearing LIVE via telephone for an
interview between 6-6.30 pm EST( time may change - J.F.) . Now I've already invited you down
to the station for the marathon, I hope this serves as an extra
incentive.

I know so many of you have questions for Elvis and this seems like as
good a time as any to let me know. I'd love to incorporate some of your
questions in with my interview, so please fire away with your queries.

I'm also working on some cool premiums including the new DVD. BTW, have
I mentioned that this is radiothon and we'll be taking donations? We
have cool premiums including t-shirts, 3 CD's for $35 and much more.

Coordinates are below. I can't tell you how happy I am to have you
folks to share this news with.

Peace,

John O

This is on now!

Apparently they've already played that Texas Marching Band's version of Il Sogno.

Weird Nightmare just played.

Tune in - listen now!

U.K./Ireland readers - the interview with Elvis will be at about 11 o'clock this evening.

Good to hear ole Dec yapping on (and on and on) saying nothing really new. The one bit of info was what he was listening at the moment and trust him to go for an obscure one. The track he didn't fully name was Wriggle Like A Fucking Eel by Whitehouse. It's from a 2003 mini album now going for silly prices on Amazon. This lot appear to have it on catalogue,

http://www.volcanictongue.com/artist.php?art=Whitehouse

I've just ordered the one copy available at Gemm.

A mp3 of the track can be got here

http://www.to-here-knows-when.co.uk/mp3 ... %20Eel.mp3

It's pretty hardcore, btw.

In the interview Elvis says his current fave. cover of his songs is a bossa nova version of Pump It Up . He either couldn't recall or couldn't remember the artists in question.

It's probably this -

Prozak For Lovers
© 2001 Bruce Lash / Artificial Records

2. Pump It Up

My copy lists -

Songs adapted by Bruce Lash
Vocalists: Bruce Lash and Maura Carey

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He also mentions that he took part , in the last few days, in a recording session with Hazel Dickens.

http://efolkmusic.org/ArtMusic/ViewArtist.aspx?AID=510

Asked about the forthcoming re-re-issues he is very non-specific but, as John O later comments, it looks like they will merely be budget re-issues of the Warner albums ( 1986 onwards) without the bonus discs.

Elvis mentions that he is going to the Scritti Politti gig in New York tonight ( Nov.10th)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He also talks up Steve Nieve's 'Welcome To The Voice' opera , due for release in the 'New Year'. Sting sings the part Elvis sang in the workshop performance of it at Town Hall, New York in 2000. Elvis' part in the recording was done by John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants back in '00.

Listening here in Dublin it was odd to hear his contempt for the U.K./Ireland. After the intelligence of most else he said it's peculiar that he should choose to make such generalistic and extreme comments. Allowing for the emotional upheaval of broken relationships etc. it's still a very narrow mind-set. Considering all the very many advantages I see of living here I can't help feeling sorry for someone who can't feel able to feel the same. However , horses for courses etc.

More corrcetly, a horses ASS on many occasions he can be, there's no doubt in my mind.

John O posts to listserv -

( extract)

Suffice it to say that it is your support and appreciation that makes
all
the work involved in doing such an endeavor (and believe me, there is A
LOT
of work involved) all the more worthwhile.

Your kind and generous support was unbelivable. We still need to tally
the
internet contributions, but we will have raised well over $2000 over
the
course of the marathon. I'll keep you posted when further information
is
available.

Obviously the music part is easy, the pitching for money was hard and
the
interview was a tad on the frustrating side. I was very grateful that
Elvis
was willing to speak to us for so long and glad that he was so open,
but he
obviously needs to be in control of the interview and was difficult to
move
onto new topics. He was also extremely evasive about many questions I
asked.
For instance, instead of being able to look at the internet as a
communication opportunity with his fans, he was very focused on digital
rights management and the loss of royalties online. It then made no
point to
go further about the website.

I'll comment more later, but the impression I get is that, at this
point of
his career, he is letting things come to him rather than going out and
making things happen and, it a lot of ways, he's benefitted greatly
from
circumstances and his ability to colloborate with other artists.

It also sounds like we won't be hearing a new album for quite some
time.

I think I probably could have gotten him to speak a little longer, but
I
honestly thought that we were pretty much done. I know people were
asking
about specific songs and such, but I just didn't feel that he would be
able
to focus on the topic.

So, anyway, it turns out that Elvis Costello was at the show last night, but he had to leave before we went on. Oh, and Mary Margaret O'Hara was at the Toronto gig. Just saying.

I e-mailed Bruce Lash , the male performer on the (probable) Bossa Nova version of PIU that Elvis mentioned , telling him about it .

He responded -

hi john,

wow! that's huge! i would love to hear the interview
if you can get
it
to me.

thanks for sending this along to me. god, i hope
there's nobody else
doing bossa nova versions of elvis songs.

cheers,

bruce.

The interview is now more easily available here -

http://www.paulinglis.org/trainspotting ... 0_2006.MP3

Live by 'phone from his NY apartment just before the twins were born, it was originally meant to last 15 minutes but ended up at 44 minutes. It's relatively unguarded , Elvis perhaps thinking it wasn't going further than a niche radio listener-ship. What made me dig it out are the comments at about 22 minutes about book writing and biographers. I haven't had a chance to listen to it in full so maybe there are some additional comments on other matters that have taken on significance not noticed at the time.
