In his Nov. radio interview I noted Elvis saying -
http://www.elviscostellofans.com/phpBB2 ... php?t=5901
He also talks up Steve Nieve's 'Welcome To The Voice' opera , due for release in the 'New Year'. Sting sings the part Elvis sang in the workshop performance of it at Town Hall, New York in 2000. Elvis' part in the recording was done by John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants back in '00.

Photo Session with Carole Bellaiche
mardi 30 janvier 2007
Muriel and I spent an energising and bracing moment around Paris, under the skillful lens of Carole Bellaiche. Although the sun didn’t appear once through the blanket of grey clouds, Carole’s bouyant personality kept our energy focused and we look forward to reviewing contact sheets with her on Friday.

Ah yes, Welcome to the Voice...the New York workshop gave birth to the legendary Listserv Algonquin Roundtable, when about 30 of us took up the half of the Algonquin Room not used up by Steve's post-performance bash, and we mingled with the various luminaries...
Great night that was.
Great night that was.
Everybody's hiding under covers... who's making Lover's Lane safe again for lovers?"
This old quote is a little bit inaccurate-

'I'M JUST a stupid blonde singer," says Barbara Bonney. I can think of a few divas who measure up to that description, but Bonney is certainly not one of them. The American-born soprano has thrilled opera-house and concert-hall audiences around the world for more than a quarter of a century, particularly through the fresh definition and effortless fluidity she brings to her trademark Mozart interpretations. With 400 songs in her repertoire, almost 100 discs to her name, and 100 concerts to fit into her hectic schedule each year, she remains firmly at the top of a tough profession.
Nonetheless, the recordings continue - in particular a new disc she recently recorded with Sting, in which she performs music written by Steve Nieve, his keyboard player. It's due out next year.

Steve writes -
Carole Bellaiche has a way to look at people that we like very much. It’s very close to what the psychoanalysts are calling the neutral benevolence. It’s a sort of art that consists in the fact to make each subject in front of her objective just as beautiful as he can be, not sublimated, not transformed, not incorporated by her camera, but just like in a perfect light, and with a kindness and a generosity. We are very average people, but she captured the very special relation that bonds us. It’s all the light that goes between us that appears magically in her photos.

Hommage to Jacques Roumain with Alain Blondel (BARCELONA)
Just back from Barcelona. I enjoyed very much this experience. The poet Syto, for an unknown reason, did not show. Alain Blondel and I therefore did a duet, painting and music. We were inside an apartment on the roof of the Insitut Francais of Barcelona. People climbed eight floors past several art installations to discover our 'piece' and peace. It was a homage to Jacques Roumain, the poet Haitian, who wrote a novel called Masters of the Morning Dew. (Gouverneurs de la Rosée)

Incidentally, if anyone's interested, Steve Nieve's ex-wife Fay Hart
(who
co-wrote a bunch of songs on the Attractions album, and was allegedly
the
inspiration for "Pump It Up") is currently Writer In Residence at the
Kerouac
House. The Kerouac House has a Myspace page at

where you can read her occasional jottings, and very interesting they
are too.

A question: I am wondering if anyone still listens as I do to vinyl recordings? In other words is there a record deck still functioning in your home. My friend Vincent Segal is releasing his next album on vinyl format and no other. Perhaps this is a way forward to stop piracy and to protect the pleasure of listening to recorded music. I would love to know what the reaction would be if music was only commercially available on vinyl?

I would love to know if any journalists/radio D.J's are interested in discussing "Welcome to the Voice". I am looking to do some promotion of the album and happy to receive propositions.
Strangely on this tour I have not been asked one interview, either in print or on radio. Is it a sign of the times?
If you are involved in any kind of publication that could speak about this record, or are doing any kind of radio broadcasting, I would be happy to talk to you, in person or by telephone. Contact me either on this board or on my email above.

The point is, I'm moving around America and you would think that there would be the opportunity to talk to some newspaper journalists, or magazines or go on a radio and discuss the record, which is an unusual record, and I believe it deserves attention from the media. I haven't been offered one interview here in the States. I find that strange, I cannot understand it.
Well, tomorrow I will call personally the 93XRT, I will try to speak with Norm Winer
I'll keep you informed...
And we are discussing putting Welcome to the Voice on stage next year. Several performances in France, in Lyon, and America, New York... is the plan we dream to follow...
I will keep you informed....

STING, BARBARA BONNEY, ELVIS COSTELLO, BRODSKY QUARTET & OTHERS
Welcome to the Voice (Deutsche Grammophon)
Welcome to the Voice is a 70-minute opera-in-concert that mixes pop stars with operatic greats. But Muriel Teodori's pseudo-poetic libretto about a steelworking opera-diva stalker could only please an angst-ridden teen. Teodori's husband (and regular Elvis Costello comrade) Steve Nieve supplies a lightweight, minimal score that does not allow the many talented voices to shine. Sting has the starring role as the enamoured prole – which is a love-or-hate proposition (I hate the way he chews each note as if it were freshly pulled toffee). Barbara Bonney is wonderful, but doesn't get much singing time. Top track: fuhgedaboutit.

Belgian newspaper "De Morgen" gives WTTV four stars!
Opera met zwaargewichten uit pop en klassiek
Cross-over > Steve Nieve & Muriel Teodori > Welcome to the Voice JJJJ
