Daniel Craig is going to be on the same night , flogging Casino Royale. Maybe Elvis will get to tell his story about nearly recording From Russia With Love for a Bond tribute album ; apparently schedules prevented him.

Are we to assume this is a duet with Rosanne Cash or does EC have something new up his sleeve?

I suspect a duet - why else would they have on two musical guests?

He was also in the backing band the last time Elvis and Rosanne teamed up:

I'm still puzzled by this booking. Rosanne has a newish album and Elvis has a DVD coming out later this month, but a joint appearance doesn't seem like a very effective way to promote either project, especially if they're planning to do "Our Little Angel" (or "Big River," for that matter).

I suspect it may have something to do with The Music of Bob Dylan at Lincoln Center event

Elvis isn't on the bill, but a surprise appearance is more-than-likely considering the involvement of Rosanne Cash and Allen Toussaint.

Also notable is the fact that Larry Campbell was a longtime sideman of Dylan's.

Well, I wasn't expecting this!

Note that this suggests a Tuesday airdate, but I think they're just taping tomorrow for a Friday broadcast. (Tomorrow's a rerun according to Letterman's website.)

Costello & Cash take on The Butcher's Boy

Elvis Costello and his friend Rosanne Cash, backed by a terrific all star group of musicians in an old-time lineup, turned in a hushed, gripping performance of the ancient murder ballad The Butcher's Boy at a taping of the Late Show with David Letterman last evening. No happy ending in that one. Costello's steady lead singing definitely fit the subject matter, and it recalled the matter of fact source version by Buell Kazee, recorded in 1928 and found on the famously influential Anthology of American Folk Music Edited by Harry Smith.

This performance (to air this Friday, Nov 10), reprises Costello's performance on the recently released The Harry Smith Project: Anthology of American Folk Music Revisited, a live cd/dvd box set produced by the matchless Hal Wilner.

Did Elvis dress himself here, or did someone do that to him?

I'm particularly impressed that this press release quotes word-for-word Harry Smith's original "headline" synopsis of the song, found in the liner notes to THE ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC!

These headlines are, btw, a complete blast to read. Take for example this description of "Froggy Went A'Courting" (Or "King Kong Kitchie Ki-Me-O", as it's known here): "ZOOLOGIC MISCEGENY ACHIEVED IN MOUSE-FROG NUPTUALS, RELATIVES APPROVE".

Or, more on topic, "Ommie Wise" can be summarized as "GREEDY GIRL GOES TO ADAM SPRINGS WITH LIAR; LIVES JUST LONG ENOUGH TO REGRET IT."

It was a good performance - nothing mind-blowing, but enjoyable nonetheless.
