BAD NEWS - EC and Emmylou cancel Grand Ole Opry!

Just got off the phone with Gaylord Entertainment and they told me
that "due to a death in the family", neither will be at the Opry next
week. B's going to call them as well, just so we have a double
confirmation.

I noticed that they weren't on the artists roster for next week, so I
called.

Bummer.

I was able to arrange a refund by calling Ticketmaster Customer
Service and telling them that I had ordered Grand Ole Opry tickets
through their Elvis Costello search link on their web site (which was
actually true I think <g>). You need to emphasize this, because
Gaylord has a disclaimer on their Opry page that says that all shows
are subject to change and no artist is guaranteed. Once they set up
the refund, you have to mail the tickets back to them in West Virginia
and write void on them. Once they receive them, they'll issue the
refund.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...(and TicketBastard STILL keeps
the damnable convenience fee - the bastids!)

Opry at the Ryman Cancelled

The "Opry at the Ryman" performances by Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings & Buddy Miller (Nov. 18 & 19) have been cancelled. The shows will hopefully be rescheduled in 2006.

Bummer indeed for anyone with tickets. Would have been a great night. Looking at that Gillian Welch site, I see a ref to a BBC4 session and a download of 'John Henry Was A Steel Driving Man'. The neighbouring item on the New Yorker refers to Sept 2004, so I assume that this is old news. Anyone know anything about that? Would love to see it. I don't always remember to check what's forthcoming on BBC4 and some of the music progs can be seriously good. Stuart Maconie said of her on a recent show that she was a huge Pixies fan playing in a loud guitar band before completely changing direction and going for the austere old time country folk look. She is brilliant, isn't she? Would love to see her live.

Damn, it was on last New Year. Maybe they'll repeat it. That clip is mighty fine - furious stuff. 'Give me a cool drink of water 'fore I die, Lord, Lord' Great band (Old Crow Medicine Show). Gillian is kinda gorgeous. John Henry doesn't appear to be on the setlist, which is odd. Hadn't realised she was playing my hometown at the folk festival in 2004. Damn and blast! I hadn't heard of her then!

Otis,

There's a DVD of the BBC4 Gillian broadcast currently being torrented at Dime.

http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=66999

There's also a streaming version of the unaired "John Henry" at:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/music/feat ... elch.shtml

I'm a Gillian and Old Crow Medicine Show fan as well, and I've really been enjoying both of these!
in a certain light, he looked like...

Welch's website states that they are going to try and reschedule the shows for 2006. Hopefully I'll be able to mosey my ass on over to Nashville when they do because this is some once in a lifetime shit we're talking about here.

Got mine traded in for jan 06 today. It was supposed to be my son's first EC concert, I saw him in March at the Ryman and again in Atlanta at Chastain park. Got front table 1 ft from the stage for 80% of face value. T was heartbroken when I told him they cancelled. If they reschedule we will be there, if not it is Atlanta in May.

For those of you that can not make it, you can go to http://www.wsmonline.com and listen to the show in its entirety. WSM radio in Nashville plays the Grand Ole Opry shows live. Nashville is on Central Standard Time.

Dave posts to listserv-

If anyone other than Rozy and Mary are planning to come to Nashville
for tomorrow's Grand Ole Opry show, we (R & M & Bodayle and myself)
are getting together at the Japanese restaurant "Okinawa" at 5 -
5:30pm. It's about 2 blocks from the Ryman. It's on 4th Ave. (the
street on the rear end of the Ryman). Go up the hill toward downtown
and it will be just over the crest of the hill on the right.

Make sure you dress warm 'cause it's going to be really cold.

And Mr. Foyle, please feel free to pass this info to the Fan Forum.

And now, I'm off to get ready for radio *and* tonight's Opry show.

Guys, this show was great. This was my sons first E.C. show. He grabbed the digital camera and headed to the front row to take pictures and he got some good ones. He is only 10 it was his first concert ever. If you want some pics send me an email to accountantstan@yahoo.com and I will shoot them over to you.

Surprised The Scarlet Tide got as good as a response as it did, many cheered loudly to the new verse. Gathering Flowers for the Masters Bouquet did not sound as it did at Chastain Park in Atlanta. Wheels, Love Hurts, and Nighttrain were awesome. Hoping for PLU, maybe tomorrow.

Dave -

Well, I couldn't go in person (it''s my son's birthday this weekend)
but did get to listen online at http://www.wsmonline.com. EC and Emmylou
performed

Wheels
Love Hurts
Must You Throw Dirt in My Face
Gathering Flowers for the Master's Bouquet
Mystery Train
Scarlet Tide
(with the lyric change at the end)

It was fun to hear. This will apparently be archived for listening
again next week at the site. Tomorrow they will do an hour for TV and
then another 1/2 hour later on the radio.

Mike-

Well, I was there and it was really great. This segment was really
different
for the Opry. Normally the host does the opening and closing song of
the 30
minute segment and the other guests do only one or two songs each. But
here
Emmylou as host was clearly honoring EC in his Grand Olde Opry debut.
It was
his set all the way and he really showed his abilities to carry on like
a
classic country singer. It was a little bit rough at the beginning as
he had
to tone his voice down to stop singing over Emmy. You could barley hear
Gillian Welch at all. The band which also featured David Rawlins on
guitar,
Victor Kraus on bass, and Fats Kaplin on everything, was great.

EC was in black with cowboy hat and Emmy was beautiful as always.

Can't wait to see what they do in the hour set tomorrow.

We'll have more later...

dave weil, eclistserv, adds

A couple of things that surprised me about last night:

While all of the segments got nice applause, Elvis got a ROAR. I was
shocked. And when he sang *the* line in The Scarlet Tide, he got a big
applause and some yelps. Shocked the shit out of me because the
audience for The Opry is mostly tourists and hard core country people.
Lots of tour busses from Wisconsin and all that. Maybe President Bush
HAS lost the heartland.

EC and co. were having some great fun last night. He seemed really
stoked to be there and he really was amused at the commercial
announcements between songs (there's an announcer at a podium on the
left of the stage talking about Martha White flour). David Rawlins was
especially pleased to be sharing the mic with Elvis and I think
Emmylou was warmed to see the reception that they got.

Heck, even Dierks Bentley didn't get the roar that Elvis did, although
he *did* get a lot more girls up front taking pictures. He did comment
about how cool it was that Emmylou and Elvis were there (he's the
newest Opry member, you know).
