Countdown to Costello

AFTER mysteriously postponing a show several months ago, Elvis Costello finally makes it to the Bournemouth International Centre tomorrow with long-time musical collaborator Steve Nieve on keyboards.
Equally at home with viciously-delivered tales of twisted hate as well as the more tender love songs showcased on his last album, North, Costello continues to confuse, confound and fascinate fans and critics alike.
The actual set list is, of course, a closely guarded secret and nobody is absolutely sure exactly what he'll play, but Costello has such a rich and diverse body of work, it's hard to imagine the show will be anything other than unmissable.
He's currently working on two new music projects and a couple of books.
This autumn he'll put out a new album with The Imposters, a loose collective of respected British and American session players with a rootsy feel. It'll coincide with the release of Il Sogno, his first full-length orchestral work, which has been recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Michael Tilson-Thomas. The release will come with an extra CD recorded live at this summer's North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands.
Elvis has also been busy writing notes and selecting bonus material for the ongoing re-release of his mighty back catalogue.
Slated for August release are 1981's Almost Blue, 1984's Goodbye Cruel World and 1995's Kojak Variety, each with a bonus CD of unreleased material.
And in his spare time, he's working on a couple of books - one takes its cue from the styles, themes and characters found in his lyrics; the other he's called a "work of comic philosophy" entitled How To Play Guitar, Sing Loudly and Impress Girls... or Boys.
