Jack White, Paul McCartney + More to Appear on ‘SNL’ 40th Anniversary Special

This Sunday (Feb. 15), Saturday Night Live will celebrate its 40th anniversary with an epic, three-hour special. The Saturday sketch show has long since produced standout comic talent, but it’s also played host to countless stellar musical guest spots. To pay tribute to both facets, the star-packed guest list includes comedians and musicians alike – the latter of which includes Jack White, Paul McCartney, Arcade Fire, Fiona Apple, Elvis Costello, Paul Simon and more.

Naturally, the musical guests will appear alongside a long list of actors and comedians who SNL helped launch to fame, including Adam Sandler, Amy Poehler, Andy Samberg, Fred Armisen, Billy Crystal, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, Tina Fey and Will Ferrell – which is only to name a few.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

There's David Spade sipping on some smuggled booze, Michael Douglas, Jerry Seinfeld right below Bob Odenkirk (who is having none of this), Larry David, Billy Crystal, Elvis Costello, and Miley Cyrus's mom, Tish.

The no-longer-banned Elvis Costello is sitting right next to Paul Shaffer, and right below them is Catherine Zeta-Jones flanked by the Manning brothers and her husband, Michael Douglas.

So much lazy journalism with this 'unbanned' thing , doubtlessly recycled from some press handout. Elvis was 'unbanned' as far back as 1989

John H. highlights this -

http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/inde ... age_67.jpg

In a 1993 interview in Spin, Lorne Michaels recalled the incident quite differently than the legend had it:

How do you feel about moments like Elvis Costello changing a song in midsong?

"I remember exactly where I was at the time, I was sitting at home base, here, with Dan Aykroyd. Costello had, of course, picked his own two songs to do, so it wasn't as if we'd forced him. And all he did was another song from the same record. I guess when he started to perform, he just decided that he didn't want to do that song. And the only reason we rehearse them is so that we can set shots and lighting so that they look decent. But we never coerce people, we don't say, you must do your hit, or whatever. But I remember Danny and I sitting there and he looked at me and I said, "I think we're being hijacked here." And my attitude was there's nothing I can do about this. You know, he didn't burst into some right- or left-wing advocacy, he didn't sing "kill all the niggers" or "kill all the Jews," he just sang another song from his album. There have been incidents where people have behaved badly on the show. I don't consider his behavior bad."

Clip here: 7 minutes or so in is the reference to Pump It Up. Seems Fallon had a problem leaving the stage at the after party...

Jimmy Fallon was all over that tribute show. Too much, in my opinion. Also, I don't think he is funny - AT ALL. He is nothing like Colbert or Conan. He must have some decent writers working for him. Also, he should give up his parody singing bits on his show. it's always the same shtick w/ different artists, not very interesting, funny or ultra creative.

Christine Ohlman, a singer for the SNL band (and part of the Little Kids Rock house band in 2012), posted on Facebook:
Christine Ohlman wrote:I'll post more in the morning, but I am so very overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude for the 23 years I've spent in Studio 8H....SNL is 40 Years young tonight, and so, so many friends were there. An amazing show held together by our amazing crew, as always, and by the brilliant editors who combed through 40 years of tape to build fast-moving montages. The band shots this evening went (rightly so) to past Musical Directors Cheryl Hardwick, Paul Shaffer, and my dear friend GE Smith.... but fear not! The after-party at the Plaza featured a jam orchestrated by Jimmy Fallon, who pulled me up on stage only to have the B52s sing backup for me on "Respect" (somehow, Ariana Grande had gotten up to sing it, but Fallon handed it to me mid-tune. My apologies, Ariana!), Fallon and Kate Pierson acted as my Ronettes on "Be My Baby", a fast-paced "Pump It Up" and "Twist and Shout" with Elvis Costello, and Joe Piscopo burning it up on "Pink Cadillac" (he's a good guitar picker!) while Marty Short and Mya Rudolph danced around the stage.... It was fabulous and poignant, and SO, so funny...and.... Paul Simon shouted out to my bandmates at the end of the show, and my heart just sang right out, too, as Lenny Pickett was given the spotlight he so richly deserves! My great thanks to all of you who sent me good wishes. I am humbled and oh, so grateful for everything.

Joe Piscopo Wouldn’t Give Up His Guitar to Elvis Costello
Last night on Late Night with Seth Meyers Joe Piscopo talked about the amazing SNL40 after party that sounds like it kicked the ass of the part of the night that we got to see.

Piscopo and Fallon did a “dueling Springsteen” performance of Pink Cadillac. But that wasn’t enough for Joe. Immediately after, he told Seth, Elvis Costello came up on stage and asked for the guitar Piscopo had been playing. Knowing that if he turned over his guitar he’d have to get off stage, Piscopo diverted Costello by suggesting they do Twist and Shout, which sent Elvis up to the mic.
Video of Piscopo telling this story is at the link.

That's a cool story. Where's the pro shot video of that after party, dammit!
